A SONG OF BLADES AND STUDENTS - LEAGUE -

In 2015, we shall spend term one playing a Wargames League. Much like a sporting league, this will involve a number of teams (or in this case Warbands) under the leadership of inspiring coaches (in this case, Wargamers) vying for the coveted position of premiers.
Each week, LSCWC members will play games of A Song of Blades and Heroes against one another. At the end of the session, victory points will be tallied, and used to determine the ladder. For the first week, opponents will be randomly selected. In subsequent weeks, opponents will be selected based on victory points – players higher up the ladder will play other high-ranked players, while those lower down will play against people with similarly low scores.
Only those players who turn up for sessions will play games in a given week, those who do not come will obviously not be able to gain any VPs for that week.
At the end of the term, the player with the highest total number of victory points will be crowned as the winner of the league, and showered with glorious prizes. There will also be runners up, and possibly other awards much like those given out in such frivolous pass times as football.
Armies will be provided, and will include the following warbands:
  • ·      Orc Boar riders
  • ·      Teeming ratman multitudes
  • ·      Egyptian undead
  • ·      Goblins (with trolls and a dinosaur!)
  • ·      Vikings and their rather large bear
  • ·      Wood Elves
  • ·      Dwarves
  • ·      Samurai Bunnies
  • ·      Frogmen
  • ·      Beastmen
  • ·      Chaos Warriors (in two flavours!)
  • ·      Anything else Toppy can come up with in time…

A Song of Blades and Students

This end of year program, why not take part in a Wargames Tournament?
A Song of Blades and Students is a twelve-place event which will be run on Wednesday 10th using the award winning and stupidly easy to learn A Song of Blades and Heroes rules set. There will be a 'learn to play' game first, followed by four-five rounds of destructive one-on-one action. At the end of the event, victory points will be tallied and the winner announced!
Twelve separate warbands will be provided. So far these are:
  • Frogfolk
  • Beastmen
  • Dwarves
  • Ratmen
  • Orcs
  • Vikings
  • Samurai Bunnies
  • Wood Elves
  • Goblins
  • Chaos Warriors
Two further warbands will be announced closer to the day. Or possibly on it.

Master Painter 2014: Voting opens.

Voting is now open for the Master Painter 2014 competition! All six entries are on display in the cabinet in the general office, and photos will be posted online later today. To ensure a level playing field, names have been kept secret, and will be revealed when the winners are announced. Cast your vote in the poll at the top of the page by selecting the entry you consider to be the best painted. Remember, this is a contest of painting skill, so take a good, hard look at each figure and check out how real it looks before deciding.

This year's prize is a choice of three large monsters from the Reaper Bones range; An Ogre, a Minotaur and a Swamp Troll. The winner will be announced on September 12th.

Also in the display cabinet, you will find our Steampunk Generators from earlier this term. They are currently basking in the spotlight of public adulation, but they will be used in a game very soon.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is just around the corner. Also just around the corner, but on a more convenient date is Pirates Day at Coal Creek. In honour of the occasion, Gippsland Gamers is running free participation pirate games dressed as pirates.
Behold the full and frank details here.
Or see the details of the more mundane aspects of Pirate's Day here.

Terrain For Students

Starting August 1st, LSCWC will be running some hobby sessions instead of game sessions.
The term 'hobby' is used by game geeks to refer to all of those activities which are an important part of gaming, but which don't actually involve playing the game - things like painting figures for RPGs and making terrain for Wargames. We will be starting with some terrain building for a few weeks, followed by some figure painting. All in time for you to enter your masterpieces in the Terrain For Hippos Annual Terrain Compometition (Toppy's internationally renowned blog's internationally renowned contest!)
This will mean that we will be moving to the art building.
It will also mean you need to vote on what you want to build and paint.
Which you should do right now, using the cunning poll at the top of this page.
Note: poll results sometimes take a little while to show up. Be patient.

If you have any ideas not covered by the polls, post them in the comments and they will be considered.
Check out Terrain For Hippos for ideas.

UPDATE:
Looks like we'll be working on some steampunk generators on Friday1st. They'll be a combination of these two projects:
Skaven Reactor
Warpstone Mine
As to painting, it's looking like Fantasy Villains. Since Reaper Miniatures is blocked by Netbox Blue, I won't paste links here.

Little Wars 2014

Once again the year has rolled around to time for Little Wars! Melbourne's most magnificent miniatures mad marathon of mania and other words staring with 'm' - Little Wars is a long running gaming convention organised in part by the sinister men of Eureka 'we make a whole range of warrior frogs you know!' Miniatures.

Due to strange machinations, Little Wars has split into two events, but since one of them is held in Adelaide, no one cares.

Little Wars melbourne is on Sunday, 1st June, at Moorabin town hall in the fair city of Moorabin, which is part of Melbourne.

Little Wars 2014 is epic, featuring such things as:

  • Participation games in numbers likely to boggle the mind!
  • Warhammer played with so many figures your hair will catch fire simply from watching!
  • Traders beyond numbers selling things at prices bellow retail!
  • The infamous bring and buy stand of infamy!
  • Large, bearded men with hippos explaining how to make stuff!
  • OzPainters painting competition!
  • Lego! Because why not?
  • Other stuff!
Seriously, go check out the website and start working on getting a ride to Melbourne.

GUBQUEST: The Search for Lorenzo

GUBQUEST IS GO!

The gubs of Tripolo are in trouble; Gargok plague threatens, and there are rumours of wasps and worse than wasps. In fact, everything seems to be pointing to the end of the world as they know it. Gubmanda, the Esteemed Elder of the colony has gathered the bravest, strongest and most skilled gubs and sent them on a quest to locate the mysterious, semi-legendary wandering holy gub, Lorenzo! The gubs will have to find their way through treacherous forests and caves, and find the Wandering Toad Palace of Lorenzo; a constantly mobile toad-borne dwelling. Then they’ll have to get him back to Tripolo in time to save everyone!

On Friday 9th we will create our heroic warrior Gubs (and probably play some Gubs also!) To this end, I have create some campaign specific rules for GubQuest which will fit in with the usual Dice Chucker rule set.
Will you choose to play a powerful warrior gub, resplendent in Shell Helm and bearing a powerful Thorn Axe? Or perhaps a skillful scout? What about a powerful singer, with a repertoire of magical songs?
Since the Gubs card game doesn't have much of a backstory, I've made up all sorts of weapons and things you can have. To get the creative juices flowing, here are some samples:

  • ·      Fungus club: A small club made from a mushroom. DL: 3
  • ·      Grass Bow: A bow made from bent grass stalks, firing arrows made from thorn. Range: 8/12/16, DL :3

  • ·      Leaf Armour: Armour made from thick leaves. AL: 2
  • ·      Shell Shield: A shield made from a different kind of nut shell. AL: 1

  • ·      Song of Courage (TN: 10): All Gubs within 6 squares get +2 to any attacks they make.
  • ·      Song of Saftey (TN: 10): All Gubs within 6 can resist traps on  a 4+.
Naturally, none of this is officially endorssed by Game Wright, manufacturers of Gubs. But since we all love Gubs so much, I'm sure no one will mind if we create our own silly home brew RPG for it, as long as we never try to sell it or anything.

Oh, and I will be doing some paper figures next week. Probably. I am pretty busy with Face/Off, Little Wars and comissions...
